SUMMARY:Open House New York 2019: Solar RoofPod & Harlem Garden for Urban F
 ood
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to all in conjunction with Open House New York. G
uided tours at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.\n\nVisit the rooftop of the Spitzer Sc
hool of Architecture (Vinõly Architects) to see its Solar Roofpod and ur
ban farm. This student-designed 800 s.f. micro-dwelling is surrounded by
a garden and apiary that provide Harlem residents and students with exper
ience raising agricultural crops and keeping bees.\n\nThe Solar Roofpod i
s a plus-net-energy dwelling designed to provide local green energy for u
rban buildings. The prototype was designed and built by students under th
e supervision of Prof. Christian Volkmann at City College for the Departm
ent of Energy’s 2011 Solar Decathlon. It returned to CCNY in 2014 to se
rve as a living classroom and a hub for sustainable design.\n\nWith its 10
kWp of electricity and 12 kWp of additional thermal energy production\,
the Roofpod provides surplus to its host building and can serve as a resi
lient back-up system in case of grid outages. The modular building allows
elements to be freely combined. The building envelope\, the surrounding
green roof system\, and the “solar trellis” comprise the structure.\n
\nThe adjoining Harlem Rooftop Garden provides the vital link among STEM s
tudies\, our local food system\, and health. The Spitzer School together
with the on-campus High School for Math\, Science and Engineering created
this urban farm and offer joint interdisciplinary programs for high scho
ol and college students. The farm contains plants in containers with an
irrigation system built on steel beams as well as two bee hives.\n\nA few
blocks farther north within architect George B. Post's landmarked Neo-Goth
ic campus\, Shepard Hall's historic Great Hall will also be open 10:00 a
.m.-2:00 p.m. Step inside this soaring jewel--one of the largest rooms i
n all of New York City--and learn about its history and architecture--fr
om the chief architect guiding its restoration\, Carl Stein. Tours at 10:
 00\, 11:00\, 12:00\, and 1:00.
