SUMMARY:Master of Urban Planning in Urban Design Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Spitzer School's post-professional program for
students with architecture or landscape architecture backgrounds: Urban D
esign (Master of Urban Planning aka MUPUD). This session will include a w
elcome by Dean Marta Gutman\, a program overview by Professor Julio Salc
edo-Fernandez\, discussion including student and alum perspectives\, and Q
&amp\;A.\n\nPanelists:\n\n Amy Ho UD '25\n Yuriko Jewett UD '18\n Marcu
 s Wilford UD '18\n\nThis is a virtual event\, taking place on Zoom.\n\n\n
Zoom registration is required.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Urban Design program is ce
ntered on participatory urbanism\, the premise that only a combination of
leadership\, technical\, and design skills will lead to meaningful change
in the way we think\, plan\, and construct our built environments. Buildin
g on the leadership of the late Michael Sorkin\, the program is specifica
lly designed to foster new conversations in response to our urbanized plan
etary crises and provide transformative alternatives that radically reimag
ine our cities as equitable\, diverse\, resourceful\, and ecologically nim
 ble.\n\nCurriculum\n\nMUPUD fuses research\, design\, advocacy\, and leade
rship in unique and trans-disciplinary ways. Students and professors work
together to define questions\, propose solutions\, and disseminate their f
indings by bringing together technology\, practice\, and activism in diffe
rent strengths and scales across the program’s year-long “design think
tanks.” We have deep links and interests in both the Global North and G
lobal South\, as well as across the emerging economies of the East. The sp
ring studio typically includes a study trip to a far-flung urban site to b
oth learn from and tackle challenges in a different context.\n\n Total pr
 ogram credits: 45\n Per-semester courseload: 15 credits (4 classes)\n\nTh
e program is designed to be completed in three full-time\, sequential seme
sters (fall\, spring\, fall). For students who desire a longer course of s
tudy\, it is possible to distribute the credits over up to two academic ye
ars/four semesters.\n\nAdmissions\n\nOur next priority deadline is in Janu
ary 2025 to begin studies in Fall 2025. Please see the instructions on our
Graduate Application Instructions page. Applicants to the Urban Design p
rogram should hold a professional degree in either architecture or landsca
pe architecture. Applicants from other backgrounds will be considered only
in exceptional circumstances and on demonstration of a high level of desi
gn ability.\n\nSTEM Designation\n\nThis MUP in Urban Design program is lis
ted within the U.S. government’s official STEM fields list\, meaning gra
duates with F-1 visas may be eligible for U.S. work authorization for up t
o three years. See the STEM OPT Hub for more information.
