 ion\, gallery hours\, or online symposium.\nOpening: Tues\, March 21st\, 6

 on-Fri 10am - 6pm\nOnline Symposium: Wed\, April 26th\, 10am - 4pm\nA Zoom
link will be available soon.\nAround the world\, cities are experiencing
a profound housing emergency. While we need many new ideas to address the
condition\, availability\, and attainability of shelter. We also need to e
xamine the promise and pitfalls of overlooked knowledge from the recent pa
st.\nMass Support explores the legacy and contemporary relevance of the St
ichting Architecten Research (SAR)\, a Dutch architectural think tank acti
ve between 1964 and 1990 that proposed a radical new way of thinking about
mass housing\, one that fused the efficiency of industrial construction w
ith the flexibility of user customization. Initially led by John Habraken\
, the SAR suggested new functions for the construction industry\, for hous
 eholds\, and\, crucially\, for architects.\nAfter premiering at Eindhoven
Technical University (TU/e) in the summer of 2022\, an updated version of
this exhibition will travel to the Spitzer School of Architecture at City
College\, City University of New York (CCNY) in the spring of 2023. This n
ew iteration highlights ten recent projects that resonate in different way
s with the legacy of the SAR’s pathbreaking work — from new models of
social housing in Berlin and Barcelona to new applications of prefab const
ruction in Beijing and Brooklyn.\nOn April 26th\, an international\, virtu
al symposium on flexibility\, resident input\, and modular building in con
temporary\, residential architecture will complement and extend the exhibi
 tion’s themes\, exposing students\, academics\, policymakers\, and pract
itioners to the under-examined interface of robust community engagement an
d innovative construction technology.\nThe exhibition and symposium are th
e products of a unique collaboration between the Spitzer School of Archite
cture at CCNY\, The Architectural League of New York\, and the Curatorial
Research Collective of the TU/e with support of the Consulate-General of t
 he Netherlands\, New York.
